The program

The Pillowcase Program is a disaster resilience education program designed to help children prepare psychologically and practically for an emergency.

Aimed at students in Years 3 and 4, the one-hour workshop involves engaging discussions and interactive activities to help students:

• Understand and discuss the importance of being prepared for an emergency.
• Prepare their minds for the thoughts and feelings that may arise before, during or after an emergency.
• Understand the difference between a need and a want, and know what to pack in an emergency kit.

Each student is then given a pillowcase to decorate and take home to start their own emergency kit.

The opportunity

This role would suit those wishing to educate children and/or young people using Red Cross content and resources in a classroom setting.

The time commitment will vary, as delivery depends on school bookings. However, it is expected that you will deliver at least one session per school term.

Red Cross will ensure you receive adequate training, support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.

The impact

As a volunteer, you will help build resilient communities and support people in disasters.

You will educate children and families about the importance of being prepared for an emergency while gaining valuable experience working in schools.

Application requirements

For this role, you will be required to undertake a National Police Check, which will be organised through Red Cross.

You will also be required to hold or apply for a Working With Children Check. Red Cross can assist you with this application.

You will also be required to:

• Complete child safeguarding reference checks.
• Complete the relevant child safeguarding learning module.
• Upload a recent copy of your CV.
• Provide details for two professional references.

A valid driver’s licence is preferred.
